Welcome to the website presentation of the Water Biofilter.
The water biofilter presented in the following pages is the culmination of long-term scientific research. Using attached growth biological systems, a very high concentration of indigenous microorganisms, specialized to each case, can be achieved. With natural aeration the microorganisms can oxidise and eventually remove pollutants from potable water. This site presents one successful application of this technology – a biofilter in the village of New Vouprasio (Larissos Municipality, Achaia Prefecture) in Western Greece. The biofilter was designed, constructed, and has been treating water from the village’s two groundwater wells since June 2008. The untreated well water has high concentrations of hydrogen sulphide, ammonia, iron, manganese, and coliform bacteria. Since the filter started operation, concentrations of all these pollutants have reduced to way below the upper permitted EU levels, and in some cases were eliminated completely. The biofilter has only one treatment stage, and more importantly has zero operation cost.
This project was financed by the Hellenic Ministry of Development through the Third EU Framework Programme, Operational Programme “Competitiveness”, Regional Innovation Pole of Western Greece. |
